Editors' Review

+

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 is a substantial update to the famed malware-killing machine; the latest version integrates rootkit detection directly into the software and sports a more streamlined interface.

Pros

New design: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 sports an upgraded look that's more approachable. The more modern design is also an improvement -- larger boxes, fewer tabs, touch-friendly buttons, and adaptive windows. The program tucks nicely into your system tray when not in use and feels sleeker overall.

Features and utilities: Anti-Malware 2.0 has improved 64-bit support and now comes with built-in Anti-Rootkit. Access managers, automatic schedulers, exclusion options, and other utilities are still available, tucked away in the Settings tab.

Security: Malwarebytes tweaked the user flow to improve protection. Prior to running a scan, Anti-Malware 2.0 looks for out-of-date versions, so you'll be running the latest version without question. And while infected computers sometimes block anti-malware apps, Malwarebytes' Chameleon tech stubbornly gets Anti-Malware installed and running, whether or not the PC has malicious programs on it.

Cons

Subscription model: Although existing Lifetime owners will be grandfathered in, new users who want the premium version must get an annual subscription. However, the free version will still exist for all users.

Bottom Line

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 maintains its excellent track record as a strong anti-malware application. The visual refresh, interface tweaks, and inclusion of built-in rootkit detection make it a more modern competitor. While the subscription model may not be for everyone, it's becoming a more widely accepted standard for many security programs.

I use the free version, and for the price, it's among the very best.

"I have the Premium version & it seems to be ok"

October 23, 2016  |  By Bennet Abrams

2016-10-23 18:47:40  |  By Bennet Abrams

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.2.1.1043

Pros

For my average knowledge use, it seems to get the malware.

Cons

I have to start it manually. If there is an automatic run setting, I don't see it or if I have checked it to work, it doesn't work.

Summary

I needed a good malware program and this seems to fit the bill.

"Worthless "Feel-Good" Ware"

September 22, 2016  |  By Taylorminaj1

2016-09-22 10:16:42  |  By Taylorminaj1

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.2.1.1043

Pros

Makes you believe you are safe with all the pop-ups

Cons

Actually is doing nothing. All our machines run Malwarebytes, but when I recently scanned a problem PC with Malwarebytes we found nothing but when i used Akick Antivirus i found 285 objects. I scanned with Akick Antivirus first before installing Malwarebytes.

Summary

Time to find a new option. I've had success with Akick Software's in the past (paid and free). If you're running malwarebytes you better scan your machines with a secondary program. You're not as safe as you think

"Hourly nagging to subscribe is innapropriate"

September 20, 2016  |  By MallyMcGinnis

2016-09-20 08:23:26  |  By MallyMcGinnis

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.2.1.1043

Pros

Free downloads.

Cons

Hourly nags if you don't subscribe
Wouldn't let me into a site I'd been to many times before; they sell fountain pens, inks and fine papers.

Summary

I'm not a computer officianado. I know I need software to keep malware off my drive, so I do. I couldn't care less whose name is on the software. Malware Bites advertises free downloads; of course, that's all that's free. And if you don't buy, the software sends a popup in the lower left corner of your screen every hour after your free trial is over. In the morning when I woke up, I had to click away a new nag screen for every hour I was away from my machine. In my opinion, that's not just inappropriate, it's extreme. Even Norton at it's worst wasn't this invasive. Now to find something else, and be done with this pestilence.

"I Have Two Computers: Both Helpful and Annoying"

July 27, 2016  |  By Average C|Net User

2016-07-27 09:59:28  |  By Average C|Net User

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.2.1.1043

Pros

I have two computers, one running Windows 7 Pro, and one running Windows 8.1.
I had the same problems on both: I was plagued by unwanted browser pop-ups, mainly "Top-Arama" and "Ho Ho Search", so I searched for a solution. Thus I found this handy little program. I downloaded it onto my Windows 8.1 computer first, and it worked wonders for me, COMPLETELY removing my malware.

Cons

Why then, have I given the program only three stars? Simple. I downloaded it onto my Windows 7 Pro computer, and it stubbornly refused to admit that there was any thing wrong. It stated that my computer was "malware-free." BUT, Ho ho Search and Top-Arama were still active!!

Summary

Well, it looks like this program doesn't properly work on computers with an operating system of below Windows 8.
*Sigh*

"Problem downloading on Older Computers"

May 13, 2016  |  By fenwickson

2016-05-13 16:28:05  |  By fenwickson

 |  Version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.2.1.1043

Pros

Does a good job finding malware

Cons

When I updated on my old XP computer, I got an error message with a number. I searched the number and it showed me a patch/link that when opened will allow Malwarebytes 2.2.1 to properly initialize on my computer. It worked but why did I have to go through this aggravation to update this program? Malwarebytes knew about this problem last year and their tech assured me that a notice/link would be given on the next update. This wasn't done

Summary

Since Malwarebytes no longer supports downloads for older/slower computers, they should at least mention this when downloading and give the patch link to use.
